Storytelling at Work: A powerful tool for performance improvement professionals

In this presentation, training and performance improvement professionals will gain an understanding of why and how to work with stories of all types in an organization. Participants will experience the power of storytelling through diverse examples, and be prepared to apply the elemental principles of working with stories the very next day.

Outcomes. The presentation will answer these questions:

  • Why do stories work at work?
  • When and where should I use stories in organizations?
  • Which forms of stories are most effective, and how should I use them?
  • What story tools and processes should I use?
  • What quality and ethical issues must be addressed when working with stories?

Karen Dietz works with leaders and organizations who want to assemble and cultivate their most compelling stories and tell them in ways that produces results. Her background in the diverse fields of folklore, creativity, strategy, organizational development, high performance teams, and interpersonal communication have allowed her to develop targeted approaches to executive storytelling and organizational narratives.

As a coach, facilitator and storyteller, her clients have included Walt Disney Imagineering, Chase Manhattan Bank, City of Santa Monica, and Avery Dennison. Karen received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and is the former Executive Director of the National Storytelling Network. Her personality type reports for work environments are popular and sold world-wide.

Project Management Curriculum: Three Levels of Training Options for a Global Employee Base

This presentation is for instructional designers at all levels. Wendy will describe a training curriculum that addresses these questions:

  • How do you train project managers who do not have time for a traditional class and need succinct answers and easily accessible resources?
  • How do you train project team members and supporters with the aim of potentially grooming them for the role of project manager?

Wendy will describe the three-level curriculum of a blended training program she developed and will share a collection of supporting resources found on the Internet. The program covers critical project management best practices as identified by the Project Management Institute (PMI):

  • Introductory: General project and task management techniques including training on the tools that support project management;
  • Intermediate: Skills necessary to meet and beat project targets: including schedule, performance and cost target; and
  • Advanced: Strategies for identifying, reducing and preventing project risks, including communication planning.
