      My
        Great Great Grandfather's Family
      Seward Porter Jones - b. Mar 11, 1810, Pownal, Maine; m. Feb 10,
1836, Matilda Purington Andrews who was born Dec 11, 1817 in Lisbon,
Maine and died Dec 30, 1907; d. Dec 29, 1875. Seward was the son of William
Jones and Hannah Libbey. Matilda was the daughter of Ephriam Andrews
and Elizabeth Fulton. She died in South Freeport, Maine in Dec
30, 1907. The service was conducted by Rev. Caroline E. Angell who had
earlier served as the first woman pastor of the Universalist Church in
        Paris, Maine.
Seward and Matilda had eight children:

        - Julia M. Jones, b. Nov 6, 1836 in Lisbon, Maine; d. Oct 28, 1837 in
          Lisbon, Maine.

        - Elizabeth E. Jones, b. Sep 7, 1839 in Portland, Maine; m. Mar 23,
1862, Elija Wyman in Bangor, Maine; d. ____ 1917. They lived
          in Orono.

        - Merwin Jones, b. Jan 16, 1843 in Levant, Maine; m. Aug 1, 1866, Georgia
"Georgie" Wiswell in Brewer, Maine; d. Nov 22, 1870 in Portland,
Maine when staging fell at the Portland Co. They had a son, Merwin Jr.

        - Alphonse "Phon" Clarence Jones (my great grandfather), b.
Mar 8, 1844 in Levant, Maine; m. Nov 25, 1869, Abba Ella Knight
in Portland, Maine; d. Jan 14, 1907 in South Paris, Maine.

        - Armeda "Meda" B. Jones, b. Oct 16, 1845 in Levant, Maine;
          m. Apr 27, 1869, George A. Miller in Bangor, Maine; d. May 14, 1891
          in Freeport, Maine.

        - Miranda Jones, b. Jul 29, 1848 in Levant, Maine; d. Aug 5, 1849 in
          Levant, Maine.

        - Miranda "Minnie" M. Jones, b. Feb 13, 1851 in Levant, Maine;
          m. Apr 14, 1867 in Hampden, Maine, Ernest Morton; d. Aug 23, 1916 in
Freeport, Maine. (Seward P. Jones' 1872 will calls Miranda's husband
Elisha E. Morton; could his middle name have been Ernest?) I have a
clipping noting the death of Fannie W. Morton, wife of Ernest S. Morton,
in Freeport, Sep 10, 1933. I'm guessing that this Ernest was the son
          of Ernest and Miranda.

        - Elsie M. Jones, b. Apr 7, 1856 in Levant, Maine; m. Apr 3, 1889 Herbert
          S. Talbot in Freeport, Maine; d. Oct 17, 1935 in Freeport, Maine. (Seward
          P. Jones' 1872 will names Nellie M. Jones but not Elsie. Since he names
all his other living children, and I have no other record of a daughter
Nellie, I assume Nellie was Elsie's nickname.) NOTE: ADD MORE HERE FROM
          TALBOT LETTERS.

      Great Grandfather's Family
Alphonse "Phon" Clarence Jones - b. Mar 8, 1844 in Levant,
Maine; m. Nov 25, 1869, Abba Ella Knight in Portland, Maine; d.
Jan 14, 1907 in South Paris, Maine. Abba Ella was born Jun 4, 1850 in
Portland, Maine, and died Mar 18, 1935 in Woodfords (Portland), Maine
where she was living with her daughter, Marion Walker. Both Alphonse and
Abba Ella are buried in Riverside Cemetery, South Paris, Maine. For more
on Abba Ella's ancestors, see my KNIGHT
        page.
Phon and Ella had four children:

        - Marion Winifred Jones, b. Jul 3, 1871 in Bangor, Maine; m. Sep 26,
1900 Walter Wilfred Walker in South Paris, Maine; d. Mar 21,

her married life. Walter W. Walker was born Aug 3, 1872 in Harrison,
Maine, and died ___ 1945 in Woodfords, Maine. Marion graduated from
South Paris High School in 1889, the first graduating class. She studied
voice and pipe organ under "Madam Scalar" (Minnie Plummer

Jul 29, 1903 in Woodfords, Maine; m. Aug 7, 1930 Ruth Marsh of
West Buxton, Maine; d. Nov 3, 1975. Harold and Ruth lived in Knoxville,
          TN, and are buried in the Marsh lot in Rochester, NH. They had two children;
Elizabeth "Betsy" Jean Walker, born May 18, 1934 in New Haven,
CT, and Sally Walker (dates unknown). Betsy married Fred Reitbauer and
they had a son, Lawrence Anton Reitbauer, in late '1963 or 1964.

        - Walter Shirley Jones, b. Nov 21, 1876 in Bangor, Maine; m. 1st Mar
11, 1897 Alice Frances Graves in Norway, Maine. They lived in
South Paris where Walter worked in his father's machine shop which he
inherited upon his father's death in 1907. Walter and Alice had one
child, Doris Shirley Jones, b. Aug 3, 1897 in Norway, Maine. Her mother,
Alice, died Mar 25, 1903 of consumption in Woodfords (Portland), Maine,
where she was attended by her parents, Lewis and Estelle M. Graves of
91 Ocean Ave. Walter m. 2nd Dec 17, 1904 Mrs. Anna Maria (Snow)
Bray in South Paris, Maine. He was 28, she was 40. (Anna's first
husband was Walter Bray. I have a 1909 photo of the A.C. Jones machine
shop with Walter Jones and William Bray out front. I believe Walter
Bray and Anna Maria Bray may have been William's parents.) Walter Jones
graduated from South Paris High School in 1894. He died Apr 17, 1936,
at the home of his sister, Gertrude, in South Paris. I don't know what
happened to Anna, but she was not with Walter when he died. Her death
is not recorded in Paris town records. Walter and Alice are buried in
Riverside Cemetery, South Paris, Maine - in W.S. Jones Graves lot. Note
that Shirley is the surname of Abba Ella's lifelong friends, sisters
Mary "Mamie" and Isabel "Isa" Shirley. Mary
and Abba Ella attended school together in Portland. Mary and Isabel
later lived in Brooklyn, NY, and summered in Bethel, Maine. Doris Shirley
Jones married Sep 25, 1923 in Portland, Maine, John Randall (b.
Apr 30, 1896) of Moultonboro, NH. She died Apr 25, 1975 in Greenwood,
MA. Doris and John Randall are interred in the W.S. Jones-Graves lot
in Riverside Cemetery, South Paris, Maine.

UPDATE - March 2018: Correspondence with Stuart Estes adds some details about Walter Jones' second marriage and the fate of his second wife, Anna Marie Bray. Stuart writes, "Walters wife Anna Maria’s maiden name was Snow. She married Freeman Bray 15 Jul 1880. Her son William was born 16 Jun 1890.  Anna Maria divorced Freeman in 1903 and married Walter Jones 17 Dec 1904.  William would then be the step-son of Walter in the 1909 photo taken in 1909 in front of the AC Jones shop.  I found William and his second wife Hilda with mother Anna Maria Jones in California in 1930. I have yet to find a cross reference for the town “Township #3” that they were in but I think it is probably Roseville. I have attached that census page (William Bray1930CensusCA.pdf and annotated: WilliamBray1930CensusCA.jpg). I also think that Anna Maria died there in 1931 as she was not in the 1940 census with William and I found a California death record for Anna M Jones at about the right age. There are actually 3 Anna M Jones records so I am not positive."  I can add to this that sometime after 1930, William and Hilda Bray returned to Maine where he worked at the Bath Iron Works through 1946 when they returned to South Paris.  William Bray died February 23rd, 1976.  (William's obituary: WilliamBrayObituary.jpg)
        - Ruth Gertrude Jones (my grandmother), b. June 2, 1878 in Bangor, Maine;

24, 1968 in South Paris, Maine. "Gertie" came to South Paris
with her parents and older siblings when she was about one year old.
She graduated from South Paris High School in 1895. She and Ed are buried
in Riverside Cemetery, South Paris, Maine - Greene-Atkins plot.

        - Margaret Bancroft Jones, b. Mar 20, 1886 in South Paris, Maine; m.
1st Jun 1, 1905 Earl Linwood Wilbur in Berlin, NH. They had one
child, Dorothy Wilbur, b. Jul 16, 1905 in South Paris, Maine, before
divorcing. She graduated from South Paris High School in 1904. Margaret
          m. 2nd Aug 19, 1915 John Perley Robinson in East Sumner, Maine.
"Perley" was born Oct 13, 1879 in East Sumner, Maine and died
May 3, 1962 in Yarmouth, Maine. His parents were John H. Robinson (b.
          Mar 25, 1838; d. May 31, 1925) and Sabrina R. Bryant (b. Apr
          2, 1838; d. Aug 12, 1905). Margaret d. Jan 11, 1971 in Yarmouth, Maine.
Perley and Margaret are interred in the Robinson plot of the Elmwood
Cemetery in East Sumner. Dorothy Wilbur m. Sep 26, 1940 John Swen
at Clapboard Island, Falmouth Foreside, Maine; d. Jun 27, 1980 in Concord,
