January 5th. The usual group of roughly 70 Canada Geese (Branta canadensis).

At 17 degrees, very limited open water for them to gather.

Loud calling and wing exercizing among them was prelude for takeoff.

And they're off!

For the third day in a row, the male Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) was around again.

Lots of brief diving for food.

January 6th. Seventeen degrees. Frost in a stump. Zig-zag splits between growth rings.

The male Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) still around...

...and diving.

Clouds coming in. Heavy snow expected by evening.

Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis)...

...feeding on Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbicularis) berries.

A Toothed Polypore. Best guess is Spongy Toothed Polypore (Spongipellis pachyodon).
