July 1st. A good year for Canada Lilies (Lilium canadense).

 

 

Looking up into one with the anthers just maturing.

 

 

Fringed Loosestrife (Lysimachia ciliata).

 

.

A long-legged Fly (Family Dolichopodidae, Condylostylus sp.).

 

 

Chicory (Chicorium intybus) where the trail crosses Route 207.

 

 

Fragrant Water-lily (Nymphaea odorata) opposite the pond just east of Route 207.

 

 

The trail crosses the Blackledge River and a path below beside it.

 

 

A Whirligig Beetle (Family Gyrinidae, Dinutes sp.).

 

 

They cause dark shadow patterns below.

 

 

Exactly half of each beetle is submerged. Their eyes are split with half above and half below the surface.

 

 

There are a number of caterpillars that look quite like this. I don't dare to try an ID.

 

 

An American Copper (Lycaena phlaeas).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Eastern Tailed Blue (Everes comyntas).

One Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodius) at the marsh this morning.

 

 

 

 

 

July 3rd. Spotted Wintergreen (Chimaphila maculata).

 

 

Very unusual flowers emit pollen through pores in the tan anthers.

 

 

Meadowsweet (Spiraea latifolia). Note the male Flower Fly hovering at the right.

 

 

Still hovering. (Family Syrphidae, perhaps Sphaerophoria sp.)

 

 

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodius) amid Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata).

 

 

A double Day-lily (Hemerocallis fulva). Escaped ornamental variety or a genetic sport.

 

 

A Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) family...

 

 

...with at least 8 large ducklings.

 

 

More Canada Lily (Lilium canadense) close-ups.

A short afternoon walk at the Lyman Viaduct west of Bull Hill Road.

 

 

Rabbit's-foot Clover (Trifolium arvense).

 

 

 

 

 

Little Wood-satyr (Megisto cymela).

 

 

Spotted Touch-me-not or Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis).
