August 27th. Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele).

August 28th. A walk east of Depot Hill Road in Cobalt. Spotted Touch-me-not (Impatiens capensis).

Seed pods have a super power. Touch them...

...and they explode, sending seeds far away.

Hedge Bindweed (Convolvulus sepium). The leaf shape distinguishes it from other flowers in the Morning Glory family, Convolvulaceae.

Two-spotted Scoliid Wasp (Family Scoliidae, Scolia dubia) on Goldenrod (Solidago sp.).

Clouded Sulphur (Colias philodice) on Spotted Joe-Pye-weed (Eupatorium maculatum).

Two Spicebush Swallowtails (Papilio troilus) with the one at right chasing the one above it.

Not sure if this was a territorial squable or courtship related.

Wild Indigo Duskywing skipper (Erynnis baptisiae). Similar to Juvenal's Duskywing which only flies in Spring. These have three broods in Connecticut and may be seen from mid-May to late October.

It was nectaring on Bush-clover; best guess is Wandlike Bush-clover (Lespedeza intermedia).

Here are some of the Bush-clover flowers; this one has a Leafhopper (Family Cicadellidae) at the left.

Bush-clover plants.

It does very well here... and I've never seen it elsewhere.

A female Eastern Tailed Blue (Everes comyntas). Male wings are mostly blue above.

This Viceroy butterfly (Limenitis archippus) caterpillar mimics a bird dropping.

The caterpillar is at the lower right, looking like a bird dropping from this distance. Anyone recognize the host plant leaves?

A wasp-mimetic Locust Borer (Family Cerambycidae; Megacyllene robiniae).

A mated pair of the invasive Multicolored Asian Lady Beetles (Harmonia axyridis).

A Stink Bug nymph (Family Pentatomidae).

Leaves and spiny stems of Wild Red Raspberry (Rubus idaeus).

A brief stop east of Cobalt where the trail crosses under Route 66. Looking west.

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta).

A Meadowhawk Dragonfly (Sympetrum sp.).

August 29th. At the Route 85 parking area, a Large Lace-border (Scopula limboundata).

August 30th. Two of four young Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa) at the pond east of Route 207. Lots of Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta) too.

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) hunting.

Spotted something.

Caught something.

Take my word for it, that's a Green Frog (Rana clamitans).

On to another spot.

Just before it flew off.

Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) under the power lines. Camera sensors can't accurately portray the intense red of these flowers. My edit is closer but still not red enough.

A small Looper caterpillar (Family Geometridae) on Joe-Pye-weed (Eupatorium maculatum).

The second site where I've seen Wandlike Bush-clover (Lespedeza intermedia). Something to do with dispersal under power lines maybe?

Green Stain or Blue Stain fungus in wood (Chlorociboria aeruginascens or Chlorociboria aeruginosa).
