May 15th (continued). I arrived at Cranberry Bog just as all the goslings of at least two Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) families took to the water. Note the pair of Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) behind the adult geese.

I barely noticed the Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) far across the marsh.

Next stop was the trail in Cobalt, starting east from Depot Hill Road. Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) was blooming in purple, pink, and white.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtails (Papilio glaucus) were attracted to it.

Zabulon Skipper (Poanes zabulon).

Violets (Viola sp.) rampant in the wet rock cut.

Green Frog (Rana clamitans) in the trailside ditch through the rock cut.

Tadpoles there too.

Snowberry Clearwing moth (Hemaris diffinis), a species of Sphinx Moth.

This one is a pretty good Bumble Bee mimic.

Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus).

And another Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus); this one a female (fewer blue scales onb the hind wings).

May 16th. Pink Azalea or Pinxter-flower (Rhododendron nudiflorum).

A male Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) not far from a Wood Duck house.

A Mayfly (Order Ephemeroptera). Nice when the insects come to me. This one was on the side of my truck.
