July 31st. Male Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus).

 

 

August 2nd.  New York Ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis).

Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata).

 

 

August 3rd.  Cranberry Bog, East Hampton.  A pair of Orange Sulphurs (Colias eurytheme) at Joe-Pye Weed.  The male is courting above the female.  (Males have solid black wing margins; the female has yellow spots amid the dark borders.)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The female's raised abdomen signals receptivity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mating took place out of camera view.

 

 

Peck's Skipper (Polites peckius) on Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata).

 

 

A Sphecid Wasp (Family Sphecidae), also on the Swamp Milkweed.

 

 

 

 

 

An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) on Joe-Pye Weed.  This female has a bird nip taken out of its hindwings.

 

 

A Bumblebee (Bombus sp.) on the invasive Pruple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria).

 

 

August 8th. A Merlin (Falco columbarius); female or perhaps immature.

A late afternoon walk at the marsh revealed Flat-topped White Aster (Doellingeria umbellata)

 

 

A Beaver (Castor canadensis) was swimming up the channel.

 

 

Water drops glisten on its oiled coat.

 

 

Wild Lettuce (Lactuca sp.).

 

 

Sunlight through Hickory leaves (Carya sp.).
